Starry Skies and Sold-Out Crowds Over 150 Visitors Flock to Rutland County Museum’s Pop-Up Planetarium
All sessions for the immersive event sold out well in advance, welcoming more than 150 visitors on Wednesday, 12 August. Hosted inside a mobile inflatable dome provided by the national science outreach organisation Explorer Dome, the event offered attendees an engaging, presenter-led voyage through galaxies, stars, and the wider solar system.
The astronomy sessions proved even more memorable by coinciding with the exact day the UK experienced a rare solar eclipse.
The resounding success of the pop-up planetarium highlights growing local enthusiasm for interactive, science-based community events. It also aligns closely with ambitious plans to modernise the museum site.
A formal planning application submitted in July 2026 outlines a comprehensive transformation of Rutland County Museum into a vibrant cultural hub.
If approved, the revamped facility will feature a new entrance, a cafe and shop, flexible community spaces, a dedicated school education room, and a multi-use arts and theatre space.
The design incorporates cutting-edge digital experiences alongside a new home for the local history collection in the adjoining Catmose Cottage.
Speaking on the success of the event, Councillor Rosemary Powell, Cabinet Member for Economy and Place, emphasized the vision for the site:
"We want the museum to be a place that brings history, science, culture and the arts to life for local communities and visitors. As part of our plans for the redevelopment of Rutland County Museum, we're looking forward to in
Subject to planning approval, construction on the cultural centre is expected to kick off in March 2027, with completion targeted for late 2027. In the meantime, local families can continue enjoying seasonal activities and holiday events as the museum builds excitement for its stellar future.
Including Market Place, Market Street, Church Street, Crown Walk,
John Street, Melton Road and Deans Street and Gaol Street.
