Why We Observe Merchant Navy Day

Merchant Navy Day is a poignant occasion to reflect on the "Fourth Service." While often operating out of the spotlight, the Merchant Navy is the backbone of the United Kingdom's economy. These seafarers are responsible for transporting the vast majority of our food, fuel, and goods.

Beyond their daily economic contributions, we honour those who have served during times of conflict. Throughout both World Wars and subsequent operations, Merchant Navy personnel faced extreme peril at sea to ensure vital supplies reached our shores. Their courage and resilience have been—and remainintegral to our national identity.

The flag-raising ceremony at Oakham Castle serves as a meaningful opportunity for Rutland residents to stand together in appreciation of these maritime heroes. Whether you have a personal connection to the sea, a family history of service, or simply wish to show your support for our Armed Forces and merchant mariners, your presence is welcomed.

By raising the Red Ensign, we ensure that the sacrifices and service of merchant seafarers are never forgotten. We hope to see you there as we commemorate this important day in our local calendar.
