MP Alicia Kearns Tells Resident to "Move Elsewhere" Amid Heated Local Government Reorganisation Debate and Stolen County Signs.
Tensions surrounding the future of Rutland County Council spilled over onto social media this week, resulting in a fiery online exchange where Member of Parliament Alicia Kearns bluntly suggested that a local resident "do move elsewhere".
The digital confrontation erupted on a public post shared by the MP for Rutland and Stamford. The debate follows ongoing public outcry over central government plans that would effectively abolish Rutland County Council as part of a sweeping local government reorganisation across Leicestershire, Rutland, and Lincolnshire. Under the framework, Rutland is slated to be absorbed into a massive new unitary authority serving over 578,000 residents.
The clash began when local resident Heather Almond took to the comments section of Alicia Kearns' post, criticising the political rhetoric surrounding the dissolution of the local authority. Almond wrote:
"Perhaps if you hadn’t told people 'Rutland will disappear forever' people wouldn't have stolen them in the first place."
Unimpressed by the remark, Alicia Kearns fired back directly in the thread, labeling the sentiment absurd and issuing a stark ultimatum to the constituent. The MP responded:
"Heather Almond what a preposterous thing to say - if you don't want to live in Rutland and keep it Rutland, and you don't want people to fight for it, do move elsewhere."
