Alicia Kearns Advocacy Through Personal Experience, pulmonary emboli blood clots in the lungs a condition that nearly cost her her life.

In a powerful display of vulnerability and commitment to public service, Alicia Kearns, the Member of Parliament for Rutland and Stamford, has emerged as a crucial voice in the fight to improve maternal health safety in the United Kingdom. Sharing her own near-fatal experience, Alicia Kearns is now leveraging her platform to push for systemic changes regarding the diagnosis and treatment of blood clots during and after pregnancy.

The catalyst for Alicia Kearns’ advocacy was a harrowing personal ordeal she faced just over a year ago. A few weeks after giving birth, Alicia Kearns suffered from pulmonary emboli blood clots in the lungs a condition that nearly cost her her life.

Alicia Kearns has been candid about the emotional difficulty of revisiting this trauma. In a recent public statement, she noted the physical and psychological toll of the experience, admitting that she struggled to articulate the severity of the situation while speaking about it. She expressed profound gratitude to Dr. Laura Stephens, the medical professional who was instrumental in saving her life during that critical time.

Alicia Kearns is highlighting a critical, often overlooked reality, pulmonary embolisms are the leading cause of maternal deaths in the UK. Despite this staggering statistic, Alicia Kearns has raised concerns that current government reviews into maternity services do not adequately address or prioritise the prevention and management of blood clots.

By bringing this issue to the forefront, she aims to bridge the gap between clinical policy and the lived experience of mothers across the country. Her goal is to ensure that medical protocols are updated to provide better screening, awareness, and emergency responses for postpartum patients.

The Member of Parliament is not merely sharing her story; she is actively engaging in the legislative process to secure better outcomes. She has publicly expressed her intention to work closely with the Health Secretary to ensure that maternity service reviews are adjusted to include robust measures against blood clots.

"Lives depend on it." Alicia Kearns

Her advocacy serves as a reminder of the vital role representatives play when personal experience informs public policy. By focusing on maternal health, Alicia Kearns is pushing for a shift in focus toward early intervention, ensuring that future mothers have access to the life-saving care she was fortunate enough to receive.

As she continues this work, her message remains clear, the statistics surrounding maternal mortality are not just numbers they are lives that can be saved with the right attention and policy reform.

By Martin Brookes

Attendees are encouraged to go all-out-the more flamboyant and creative your ensemble, the better your chances of impressing the judge.

Adding a touch of rustic expertise to the day, charismatic hedgelayer and best-selling author Richard Negus returns to Lyndon. Following his sensational, "sell-out" success at the recent Nevill Holt Festival with his Words from the Hedge event, Richard will be sharing his passion for the English countryside.

He will delve into why our hedgerows are the vital "arteries of the land" and how they serve as essential lifelines for our native wildlife. You can learn more about his unique perspective on the landscape here: Words from the Hedge: A Hedgelayer's View of the Countryside.

Community Policing Update, Staying Connected and Tackling Priorities Across Rutland, Action in Uppingham

Image: Leicestershire Police

As we move into the height of summer, Rutland Police are doubling down on their commitment to community engagement and proactive safety. From recent events across our villages to the setting of new quarterly policing priorities, your local officers are working hard to ensure Rutland remains a safe place to live and work.

Building strong relationships with residents is at the core of the Rutland policing strategy. PCSO Beth has been busy connecting with the community, recently attending events in Whissendine and Market Overton for Feast Week.

"I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone that stopped to have a chat and welcomed me," said PCSO Beth. "It was lovely seeing so many of you—and yes, the homemade cakes were a highlight!"

If you missed out, you have plenty of opportunities to catch up with your local officers in the coming weeks:

  • July 7, 2026: Edith Weston shop at 11:00

  • July 8, 2026: Oakham Town Council meeting, Long Row Office at 6:30 PM

  • July 14, 2026: Wing Church at 16:00

Following community feedback, the South Rutland policing team has assessed and reset their priorities for the period spanning summer through to autumn. These priorities reflect the issues that matter most to you:

PriorityFocus AreaAction Plan
Theft & BurglaryDwelling, commercial, and general theft.Overt patrols, robust policing of offenders, and targeted crime prevention advice.
Rural CrimeAgricultural equipment, livestock, and wildlife crime.Partnership working with the Rural Policing Team, target hardening of vulnerable sites, and intelligence-led patrols.
Road SafetyA47 corridor, A606, and surrounding villages.Increased marked vehicle patrols, speed monitoring, and collaboration with road safety partners.

PC McKinnon emphasised that these priorities remain data-driven and community-led. Residents are encouraged to follow official social media channels for ongoing updates and safety messaging.

Action in Uppingham

In response to a recent increase in antisocial behavior, Rutland Police have confirmed they are stepping up patrols in Uppingham.

Local councilors recently met with senior officers and the county council's community safety lead to coordinate a robust response. To ensure resources are allocated effectively, police are now holding weekly meetings to monitor the situation. Officials have reassured residents that all concerns reported will receive a response, and the community is encouraged to continue reporting issues to help inform these policing efforts.
