Vandalism Strikes Council-Owned Property on Princess Avenue, Oakham, Amid Relocation Discussions

Vandalism Strikes Council-Owned Property on Princess Avenue, Oakham, Amid Relocation Discussions

A vacant property on Princess Avenue, situated on Oakham’s Royce Recreation Ground and owned by Oakham Town Council, has been targeted by vandals who smashed a gate and fencing.

The mindless damage has sparked local concern, drawing attention to the vacant site just as the Town Council renews efforts to evaluate the building for its own future use.

Following the discovery of the damage, at least one town councillor initially questioned whether the forced entry might have been tied to debt collectors who have been attempting to gain access to the vacant premises.

However, a closer inspection of the scene told a different story. Evidence gathered at the site suggests that bricks may have been deliberately used to smash through the boundaries, pointing instead to acts of mindless vandalism rather than professional enforcement action.

The timing of the vandalism has thrown an unexpected spotlight on the property, which is located near the area's popular play spaces and outdoor facilities.

Just last week, the Town Council took proactive steps by re-establishing a dedicated working group. The working group has been tasked once again with investigating the viability of the council relocating its operations directly to the Princess Avenue premises.

As local representatives weigh the potential for bringing the council-owned building back into active use, the council is likely to face renewed calls to tighten security and address the vulnerability of the site against further anti-social behavior.
