Returning to where it all began, Lucy Pearson is stepping through the gates of Oakham School with a unique perspective. As an Old Oakhamian and former Head Girl, she has broken a 440-year glass ceiling by becoming the school’s first female head in its rich history.

Ahead of the new term, Pearson sat down with Rob Persani at the Head’s house, Deanscroft, with her dog Jeff relaxing nearby, to discuss her remarkable journey from the school playing fields to the highest levels of educational leadership and sports governance.

Her path to leadership has been forged through extraordinary experiences both in education and elite sport. A former international cricketer, Pearson played 12 Test matches and over 60 One Day Internationals for England, famously terrorising batting line-ups as a left-arm fast-medium opening bowler. Beyond her athletic achievements on the pitch, she has commanded powerful presence in sports boardrooms—serving as a director on the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and later holding the pivotal role of Director of Education at The Football Association (FA).

Lucy Pearson brings this wealth of high-level strategic and operational experience back to Rutland, having already built an impressive portfolio of senior leadership positions within independent education, including serving as head of Cheadle Hulme School.

Speaking from Deanscroft, Lucy Pearson reflected on what it means to return to the community that originally shaped her. Her appointment marks an inspiring new chapter for Oakham School, blending deep-rooted nostalgia for her formative days as a pupil with a modern, trailblazing vision for its future.
