Community Blow Voluntary Action Rutland Minibuses Targeted in Vandalism and Theft
Voluntary Action Rutland (VAR) has been left heartbroken following a devastating break-in at their Oakham Enterprise Park depot. Overnight on Friday, October 2, two of the charity’s wheelchair-accessible minibuses were targeted.
While one vehicle was broken into, the second was stolen, extensively vandalised, and ultimately stripped of its engine. The incident has left staff and volunteers devastated, with a spokesperson sharing that "gutted and frustrated does not come close to how we are feeling."
The loss of these specialised vehicles delivers a major operational blow to the charity's transport department. VAR provides vital mobility and transport services for numerous local community groups, schools, and organisations throughout the region.
Leadership has already issued advance apologies to the many residents and groups whose upcoming trips, outings, and essential journeys will face unavoidable disruption while the fleet is compromised.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident, and the organisation's vehicles are insured. However, insurance claims take time to process, and the immediate need to maintain community services remains urgent.
True to form, the charity is refusing to let the setback define them, stating: "We will bounce back, stronger than ever and start to fundraise."
How You Can Help
Voluntary Action Rutland is appealing to the local community for support to ensure their valuable services are not permanently halted. Donations will go directly toward keeping their transport operations running and supporting ongoing community projects:
Support the Transport Department: Donate directly to help replace and repair the fleet via the VAR Transport Donation Link.
Support Wider Community Projects: Visit the VAR Donations Page to contribute to their broader charitable initiatives across Rutland.
