Rutland Residents Invited to Free Flood Awareness Event

Rutland County Council is hosting a free flood awareness and preparedness event, 'Flood Mary', on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Rutland County Council in Oakham. The event aims to provide practical advice and information to residents, businesses, and community groups on how to prepare for and respond to flooding.

What to Expect

The event will bring together key organizations involved in flood risk management, including the Environment Agency, Anglian Water, and emergency services. Attendees will have a chance to:

  • Step inside the FloodPod, a real-life flood-resilient home.

  • Speak to experts from various organizations for guidance.

  • Check their flood risk with live mapping.

  • Explore flood doors, barriers, and other tools to protect their property.

  • Learn emergency actions and get quick response tips.

  • Share their personal stories to help with future flood planning.

  • Meet 'Flood Mary', who will share firsthand recovery experiences and practical tips for building long-term flood resilience.

Importance of Preparedness

According to Councillor Christine Wise, Rutland County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport, Environment and Communities, flooding is a growing risk due to climate change. While the risk of severe flooding in Rutland may be lower than in other areas, local communities have still experienced the devastating effects of flooding, including disrupted travel, damaged homes, and emotional distress.

"It is therefore important that we all know how to prepare for severe weather, stay safe and prevent damage from flooding," Cllr Wise said. She emphasized that with the right knowledge and preparation, communities can significantly reduce the risk and recover more quickly. The event is designed to empower residents by providing them with the necessary information to protect their homes, businesses, and neighborhoods.
