Convenience Hits Melton Road, Oakham Mini Shop Welcomes New ATM
Good news for residents and visitors on the north side of town, Oakham’s cash desert is shrinking. Oakham Mini Shop on Melton Road has officially installed a new ATM, providing a much-needed second cash point for the town center.
Stay Sharp: ATM Safety 101
While more access to cash is great, it’s also a reminder to stay vigilant. Even in a friendly town like Oakham, "skimming" and distraction thefts has happened in the past. Before you slide your card into the reader, take 30 seconds to run through this safety checklist:
The "Wiggle" Test: Give the card slot a firm tug. Scammers often place "skimmers" thin electronic sleeves over the real slot. If it feels loose, crooked, or bulky, do not use it.
Check for "Hidden Eyes" Look for anything unusual above the keypad. Tiny pinhole cameras are often hidden in false plastic strips to record your fingers as you type.
The Shield is Key, Even if you think you’re alone, always cover your hand when entering your PIN. Use your free hand or a wallet to create a "roof" over the keypad. This simple habit defeats 90% of camera-based theft.
Trust Your Gut, If the machine looks tampered with, or if someone is lingering too closely behind you, walk away and find another machine.
The addition of the ATM at the Oakham Mini Shop is a great example of local businesses evolving to meet the needs of the Rutland community. Next time you're passing through Melton Road and need some notes, you know exactly where to go just remember to keep those PINs under wraps.
