The historic heart of England’s smallest county is looking for a fresh face to welcome its visitors. Rutland County Council has officially opened recruitment for a Visitor Assistant, a role designed for individuals who are passionate about local heritage and the art of first-class hospitality.
This isn't your typical desk job. The successful candidate will spend their days within the stone walls of the Rutland County Museum and the majestic Oakham Castle, the oldest English court building that has remained in continuous use. As the frontline of the Council’s Culture team, the Visitor Assistant plays a vital role in bringing Rutland’s stories to life for residents and tourists alike.
Working across two of the region's most iconic heritage sites, the Visitor Assistant is responsible for ensuring every guest receives an inclusive and professional welcome.
What the Role Entails:
Front-of-House Excellence: Greeting visitors, handling enquiries, and providing expert knowledge on local heritage.
Operational Support: Assisting with site security, managing retail sales in the museum shop, and supporting back-office administration.
Community Engagement: Helping to deliver events, activities, and educational displays that keep the museum and castle thriving social hubs.
The position is a fixed-term contract (running until October 2026), offering a pro-rata salary of up to £25,989. It is a perfect fit for a "people person" who thrives in a customer-facing environment and has a keen eye for detail.
Why join the Culture Team?
The culture team at Rutland County Council is part of the broader Living Well Rutland initiative, which views heritage and the arts as essential components of community well-being. By joining this team, you aren't just selling tickets or guarding exhibits—you are acting as a custodian of the county’s identity.
From the world-famous collection of over 200 ceremonial horseshoes at Oakham Castle to the diverse agricultural history housed in the Museum, the work environment is as unique as the artifacts themselves.
How to Apply
If you are ready to be the face of Rutland’s history, don’t wait—the council is looking for an enthusiastic individual to join the team as soon as possible.
