Rutland Remembers the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day

Rutland Remembers the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day

On August 15, 2025, Rutland will join the United Kingdom in commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day), which marked the end of World War II. This significant milestone honors the immense sacrifices of British and Commonwealth forces who fought in the Pacific and Southeast Asian theaters, enduring brutal conditions in places like Burma and Malaya. As a county with deep military connections, Rutland is holding several events to ensure the legacy of these brave individuals is remembered and passed on to future generations.

This year marks a dual anniversary for Rutland, which has already honored the 80th anniversary of VE Day on May 8 with a flag-raising and beacon lighting. The main county-wide commemoration, "Rutland Remembers: Our 80th Anniversary Celebration for VE & VJ Day," took place over the weekend of June 28-29. This celebration, which also concluded Armed Forces Week, featured a parade, a service, and a "Party in the Park."

Commemorative Events on August 15th

To mark VJ Day itself, events will be held in three key locations across the county. These ceremonies, supported by Oakham Town Council, Uppingham Town Council, the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, and Rocks by Rail, will provide an opportunity for reflection and gratitude.

Oakham: A Commemoration Ceremony and Act of Remembrance will be held at the War Memorial at All Saints' Church at 11:50 a.m.

Uppingham: A similar Commemoration Ceremony and Act of Remembrance will take place at the War Memorial in St. Peter & St. Paul's Churchyard at 11:00 a.m.

Cottesmore: Rocks by Rail will host a special event at 1:30 p.m. alongside the "Singapore" locomotive to remember those who served in the Far-East. Those wishing to attend are asked to reserve a spot in advance by emailing curator@rocks-by-rail.org.

A Call to Remember and Preserve

Dr. Sarah Furness, the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, emphasized the importance of the anniversary, stating, "On this special 80th anniversary of VJ Day, we remember the courage of those who fought in faraway jungles, skies, and seas, who endured the harshest conditions to secure peace for generations to come." She highlighted the duty to not only remember their sacrifice but also to preserve their stories and protect the peace they secured."
