Rutland County Council Leader to Face Vote of No Confidence Tonight

Rutland County Council is set to hold a special meeting tonight at 7pm, called by the Conservative Group, where councillors will vote on a motion to remove the current leader, Liberal Democrat Cllr Gale Waller. The motion comes amidst a backdrop of escalating tensions over the council's approach to Local Government Reform (LGR).

The vote of no confidence follows a period of criticism from Conservative councillors regarding Cllr Waller's handling of devolution proposals. The Conservative group, now with seven members after a recent by-election, has expressed concerns that the current leadership has not given fair consideration to all options for the future of Rutland, particularly a potential rival bid with Lincolnshire councils. They have also accused the leadership of a "democratic deficit" and ignoring past promises to hold a public vote on LGR.

Despite the challenge, Cllr Waller has stated that she is confident she has enough support to remain as leader. The outcome of the vote will likely hinge on the support of the council's seven independent councillors and two Labour councillors as the Conservative group will need their backing to successfully remove Cllr Waller from her position.

The special council meeting will be open to the public and will also be streamed live by Oakham and Rutland News on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/OakhamandRutlandNews
