Oakham Town Council Oakham Announces Councillor Vacancy for the Oakham South Wards Following Resignation.
A formal notice has been issued announcing a vacancy for a Councillor in the South Ward of Oakham Town Council, following the resignation of Jonathan Nichols.
The official notice, signed by Returning Officer Mark Andrews and dated 8 July 2026, outlines the process for filling the seat. Local electors have until 28 July 2026 14 days from the date of the notice to formally request an election.
How to Request an Election
To trigger a by-election for this position, a written request must be submitted to the Returning Officer at Catmose, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 6HP. This request must be signed by at least ten electors registered within the South Ward of the Oakham Town Council.
If No Election is Requested
If the required number of requests for an election is not received by the deadline, the vacancy will be filled through a process called "co-option". In this scenario, the Town Council will select a person to fill the seat rather than holding a public vote.
When calculating the 14-day window for requesting an election, certain days are excluded, including Saturdays, Sundays, bank holidays, and specific periods such as the Christmas or Easter breaks.
