Lack of Volunteers May Force Closure of Rutland U3A
As it prepares to mark its milestone 30th anniversary, Rutland U3A is facing an unexpected crisis that threatens its very survival. The organization, which provides education, recreation, and companionship for around 700 local members, could be forced to close its doors permanently unless new leadership steps forward immediately.
Stuart Mason, Chair of Rutland U3A, issued a stark warning regarding the upcoming Annual General Meeting:
“We may have to close unless we get at least three new Committee Members elected at the 30th Annual General Meeting on September 9.”
For three decades, Rutland U3A has been a cornerstone of the community for retired, semi-retired, and soon-to-be-retired residents. Guided by the national motto learn, laugh, live the organization offers a diverse range of activities designed to keep minds active and combat isolation.
However, despite months of appeals to the membership base, the committee is facing a critical shortfall. With several current members stepping down due to personal reasons, the executive committee will no longer be quorate, leaving them legally unable to continue operations.
“We have been asking our 700 Members to step up and volunteer for several months, but our appeals seem to have fallen on deaf ears,” Mason explained. “We should be celebrating our 30th birthday this year. Instead, we could be facing closure.”
The future of Rutland U3A now rests entirely in the hands of its community. The organization operates in a welcoming, friendly, and supportive atmosphere, and joining the committee is a meaningful way to give back while keeping vital local networks alive.
Anyone who is retired, semi-retired, or about to retire is eligible to join. Membership is accessible with an annual fee of just £10.
Existing members who wish to put their names forward must do so by August 11. Nomination papers have been sent via email.
Online voting for the new committee will take place between August 12 and September 2.
The decisive 30th Annual General Meeting will be held on September 9.
