Oakham Mourns the Loss of Former Mayor (1999 - 2000) , Mrs (D) Joy Gregg

In 2007 Joy was also labelled as the ‘Face of Rutland’
and her commissioned portrait still hangs in the county council offices
in Catmose Street, Oakham, Rutland, the second portrait is hung
at Catmose College, both portraits were painted by the artist Paul Wright

"Oakham is in mourning following the passing of former Mayor, Joy, a much loved figure whose dedication to the town and its residents was deeply felt by all who knew her. Her unwavering commitment to the community leaves a lasting legacy. Joy moved to Oakham in 1969, appointed Oakham Mayor in 1999.

Joy's tenure as Mayor was marked by her genuine passion for Oakham, and her tireless efforts to enhance the lives of its citizens. Those who had the privilege of knowing her speak of her warmth, kindness, and unwavering spirit. Her love for Oakham was truly evident.

Joy was also a significant figure in the local arts scene. Notably, she served as the former vice chair of the Rutland Arts Theatre Society (RATS), where she contributed immensely for many years. Even at the age of 92, she was still serving RATS, stepping down from her vice chair position in 2022. Her dedication to the society, and the arts in general, was exemplary.

"She was truly the soul of RATS" one member said, "Her contributions both on stage and off where always done with enthusiasm and a willing heart."

Joy’s contributions to Oakham extended far beyond her official roles. She was a constant presence at community events, always ready to lend a helping hand and offer words of encouragement. Her presence will be deeply missed by the many lives she touched.

Joy, was a founder of  Rutland Citizens Advice based here in Oakham, Rutland. Joy also helped out with the ‘Knights School’ in Oakham which taught six to eight year-olds both medieval and modern-day behavioural codes.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Joy's family and friends during this difficult time. Her memory will forever be cherished by the people of Oakham."
