Multi-Million Pound Vision for Rutland County Museum Takes Major Step Forward as Plans Advance

Ambitious proposals to breathe new life into the Rutland County Museum have taken a significant leap forward, with the landmark cultural project advancing to its next critical stage of design and development.
Backed by a robust £7.5 million financial package featuring £6 million in capital investment from Rutland County Council alongside £1.5 million in government Local Regeneration Funding the comprehensive redevelopment is designed to safeguard the historic institution's long-term future. Local leaders hope the modernised facility will serve as a vibrant cultural destination that celebrates the county's unique heritage, enriches educational opportunities for local schools, and provides a welcome boost to the local visitor economy.
Under the current plans, the museum site will undergo extensive refurbishment and expansion. Visitors will soon be welcomed through a striking new entrance hub complete with an on-site café, a gift shop, and flexible community areas. Among the standout features of the transformed facility will be a brand-new Jurassic gallery, a dedicated Stone Age-to-medieval gallery showcasing a special Roman exhibition, and state-of-the-art immersive digital experiences designed to bring local treasures like the Rutland Sea Dragon and the Ketton Roman Mosaic vividly to life.
Furthermore, the project delivers a multi-use arts and theatre space for community performances, a dedicated education room for visiting pupils, and an upgraded home for the area's local history collection within the adjoining Catmose Cottage building.
Cllr Christine Wise, Leader of Rutland County Council, hailed the milestone as a hugely exciting moment for the region. She emphasised that the project is about much more than just preserving the past. "By transforming Rutland County Museum into a modern museum and cultural centre, we're creating a destination that will inspire residents, attract visitors and provide new opportunities for learning," Cllr Wise said. "This investment is also about securing the museum's future. By creating a more sustainable, modern visitor attraction, we're protecting an important community asset while supporting local businesses and strengthening Rutland’s visitor economy."
The scheme gained crucial momentum when the council’s Cabinet voted to push the project beyond RIBA Stage 3, unlocking the detailed technical design phase ahead of anticipated construction. This progression has already prompted formal planning applications covering necessary conservation and interior works on the listed Riding School building, as well as small-scale demolition work on the modern Poultry Hall section. The courtyard and Poultry Hall area—which has stood in a damaged state since a 1942 fire—will make way for the brand-new museum extension housing the theatre space and immersive digital galleries.
Subject to final planning permissions and technical designs, construction work on the ground is slated to kick off in March 2027, with completion anticipated by late 2027. In the meantime, preparations behind the scenes are already gathering pace. Space has been secured at the Oakham Enterprise Park to safely relocate larger museum artefacts during the works, while procurement is underway for the upcoming Roman exhibition alongside pre-tender preparations for the new palaeontology gallery.
The museum overhaul forms a cornerstone of Rutland County Council’s wider strategy to invest heavily in the region's heritage, culture, and economic growth, dovetailing with complementary public realm improvement schemes across Oakham and Uppingham town centres.
