Oakham Lights Up for Christmas!

Get ready to dazzle your eyes as Oakham prepares to light up the festive season! The much-anticipated Christmas Light Switch-On event will take place on Sunday, November 24th, 2024.

The highlight of the evening will be the official switch-on ceremony, conducted by none other than the esteemed Oakham Mayor, Paul Ainsley. As the darkness descends, some of the  town will be illuminated with a dazzling display of twinkling lights, transforming Oakham into a winter wonderland.

To add to the festive cheer, Oakham Town Councillors will be on hand to serve up warm cups of delicious hot chocolate, perfect for warming up on a chilly November evening.

For the little ones (and the young at heart), there will be exciting fairground rides taking over the Market Square from 3pm to 5pm.

On the morning of Armistice Day, November 11th, 2024, the historic grounds of Oakham Castle echoed with the echoes of remembrance. A poignant ceremony, led by the Venerable (Air Vice Marshall) John Ellis CB RAF Rtd, marked the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. As the clock struck eleven, a hush fell over the gathered crowd. A two-minute silence enveloped the castle grounds, a moment of reflection dedicated to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The silence was a stark reminder of the countless lives lost in conflicts past and present. The ceremony honoured the bravery and sacrifice of those who served and continue to serve in the Armed Forces. It was a time to reflect on the importance of peace and to pay tribute to those who fought for freedom. Dignitaries and Organisations Lay Wreaths at Oakham's War Memorial, Videos, 2024

Part One

On Remembrance Sunday, following a county service held at All Saints Church in Oakham, Rutland, a procession of dignitaries and representatives from local organisations made their way to the town's War Memorial. There, they laid wreaths to honour the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

The sombre ceremony was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who lost their lives in conflicts past and present. The wreaths, adorned with poppies, symbolised the enduring respect and gratitude owed to the fallen heroes.

Among those present were Dr Sarah Furness The Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, The High Sheriff of Rutland and organisations, e.g., local councillors, military personnel, representatives from veterans' groups, and community organizations. Each group approached the memorial with reverence, laying their wreaths carefully at the foot of the monument.

The wreath-laying ceremony at Oakham's War Memorial was a solemn and meaningful event, a fitting tribute to the sacrifices made by generations of brave men and women.
