Rutland Secures Future of Holiday Activities and Food Programme for Spring 2026
Rutland County Council’s Living Well Rutland service has officially opened bookings for the spring season of the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme. In a significant win for local families, the council confirmed that the initiative will continue for at least the next three years, thanks to a newly secured national multi-year funding settlement. This long-term commitment ensures that the county's most vulnerable young people will have consistent access to nutrition and enrichment during the school break.
The upcoming spring programme is set to run from Tuesday, April 7 to Friday, April 10, 2026. Designed specifically for children and young people aged 4 to 16 who are eligible for income-based free school meals, the HAF initiative serves as a vital bridge during the holidays. By providing a structured environment where children can stay active and well-fed, the programme addresses the "holiday gap" that many families face when school canteens close.
Under the current scheme, eligible participants are allocated four credits to book their chosen activities, with each credit covering one full session. These sessions are more than just childcare; they are curated to promote physical wellbeing and social connection through a variety of engaging experiences. Every session also guarantees a healthy, nutritious meal, ensuring that participants remain fueled and focused throughout the day.
Councillor Christine Wise, Cabinet Member for Transport, Environment and Communities, emphasized the profound impact the programme has on the local community. "We are proud to continue supporting families across Rutland," she stated. "The holidays can be a challenging time for many, and this initiative ensures that children not only have access to fun and enriching activities but also receive nutritious meals in a safe and welcoming environment."
Bookings for the spring HAF programme are officially live, and families are encouraged to secure their spots early to avoid disappointment. While the programme is broad, some specific activities may carry age restrictions, so parents are advised to review the details carefully during the selection process.
With the security of three-year funding now in place, Rutland’s HAF programme stands as a cornerstone of the council’s commitment to community health and child development, promising a brighter, more active spring for the county’s youth.
