Oakham Town Council to Consider Co-Option of John Michael Kennedy

Oakham Town Council is set to consider the co-option of long-standing Oakham resident, John Michael Kennedy, at its upcoming meeting on June 11, 2025. The need for co-option arises following a series of resignations and a death within the council, which subsequently led to residents not calling for new elections.

John Michael Kennedy, a familiar face in the Oakham community, previously served on Oakham Town Council, for one month after having been elected in 2016. Since his retirement, Mr. Kennedy has remained deeply embedded in local volunteer efforts, demonstrating a continued commitment to the welfare of Oakham and its residents.

His extensive community involvement includes:

Volunteer Driver with VAR (Voluntary Action Rutland): Providing essential transportation for those in need within the community.

Volunteer with “Friends of Victoria Hall”: Contributing to the upkeep and success of a key community venue.

Homechecker for various animal charities: Ensuring suitable and safe environments for animals seeking new homes.

Fosterer for Spaniel Assist Rescue & Rehoming: Providing temporary care and a loving environment for rescued spaniels.

The co-option process allows the council to fill vacancies when an election is not triggered, ensuring that the council can continue to function effectively and represent the interests of Oakham residents.

The decision on Mr. Kennedy's co-option will be made at the full council meeting scheduled for June 11, 2025.
