Oakham Castle to Host Armed Forces Day Flag Raising Ceremony This June

Oakham Castle will once again serve as the focal point for Rutland’s military appreciation, hosting the annual Armed Forces Day Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday, 22nd June.

The brief, poignant ceremony is scheduled to begin promptly at 10:30am. Members of the public, veterans, and service families are warmly invited to gather and show their support for the UK’s armed forces community.

The event marks the official start of the week leading up to National Armed Forces Day. Rutland holds a uniquely deep connection to the military; with major bases at Kendrew and St George’s Barracks, roughly one in five Rutland residents has a direct link to the armed forces.

Event Details

The ceremony provides a vital opportunity for the local community to stand side-by-side with civic leaders, dignitaries, and veterans to recognise the ongoing sacrifices made by serving troops, reservists, and their families.

Date: Monday, 22nd June

Time: 10:30am (Attendees are requested to arrive early as the ceremony starts exactly on time)

Location: Oakham Castle Grounds, Market Place, Oakham, LE15 6DT

Admission: Completely free, open to all, and no RSVP or formal confirmation is required.

Important Parking Note: To preserve the historic integrity of the site and ensure safety during the event, parking will strictly not be permitted within the Oakham Castle grounds. Attendees are advised to utilise the public pay-and-display car parks located throughout Oakham town centre.

Whether you have family in the forces or simply want to say a quiet thank you to those who serve, your presence on the castle lawn is a powerful reminder of the unique bond between Rutland and its military units.
