Final preparations are underway at the Oakham Showground for the highly anticipated Rutland County Show, and organisers are gearing up for one of the event's most popular attractions: the For Rutland Grand Bottle Tombola. Ahead of the gates opening, the team of volunteers tasked with managing the monumental operation received a special boost when the High Sheriff of Rutland, Susannah Fish, dropped by to see their hard work firsthand.
The High Sheriff visited the volunteer team as they faced the daunting but cheerful task of checking, categorising, and cataloging thousands of donated bottles. It is a massive logistical effort that takes days of meticulous planning before the stall can even open to the public. This year, well over a thousand bottles have been generously donated by the local community through various drop-off points, shops, and businesses across the county.
The resulting prize pool is famously diverse. For the price of a ticket, lucky showgoers stand a chance to win everything from high-end champagne and artisanal gin to everyday essentials like lemonade, ginger beer, and even bottles of shampoo. The Grand Bottle Tombola marquee, traditionally located right next to the main show ring, is consistently one of the busiest hubs at the showground, drawing massive crowds eager to try their luck for a good cause.
While the tombola offers plenty of fun and a lighthearted, win-win spirit for visitors, the driving force behind the initiative is entirely serious. For Rutland is a dedicated fundraising arm for the Citizens Advice Rutland. All the proceeds generated from the tombola go directly toward funding two specialist advisers. These professionals provide crucial, non-medical advice, financial guidance, and practical assistance to people of all ages who are living with the challenging consequences of long-term and debilitating health conditions.
During her visit, the High Sheriff praised the energy and dedication of the volunteers, noting that their behind-the-scenes efforts embody the true spirit of Rutland's community. Thanks to their tireless work sorting through thousands of donations, the stall is fully prepared to welcome the crowds at the showground for what promises to be another spectacular Rutland County Show.

The Heartland Returns Why the 2026 Rutland County Show is Unmissable
The Heartland Returns Why the 2026 Rutland County Show is Unmissable

There is a specific kind of magic that settles over the Rutland Showground come late May. It’s in the low lowing of the prize cattle, the scent of fresh-cut grass, and that unmistakable buzz of a community coming together to celebrate its roots. As a local who has spent years capturing the spirit of our county through a lens, I can tell you the Rutland County Show isn't just an event; it’s the heartbeat of Rutland.
This year, on Sunday, 31st May 2026, the 191st edition of the show returns to Oakham, promising a day that bridges our rich agricultural heritage with the vibrant, modern energy of Rutland life.
The Main Ring remains the undisputed star of the show. Whether you’re there for the high-octane thrills of the stunt teams or the rhythmic elegance of the scurry driving, there’s a timelessness to it all. For those who prefer the "heavy lifters," the Shire horses are always a personal highlight majestic reminders of the power that once worked these fields.
From the finest sheep and cattle to British Showjumping, the competitive spirit is as fierce as ever.
The food hall is a dangerous place for the hungry, an array of artisan producers that make "shopping local" an absolute treat.
With animal encounters, traditional funfairs, and rural craft demonstrations, it’s the ultimate day out for the kids and the young at heart.
One of the most heartening sights every year is the “For Rutland” Grand Bottle Tombola.
The gates open at 9:00 AM, and I highly recommend getting there early to beat the rush.
Parking: Free on-site parking is available, including dedicated disabled bays.
Shuttle Bus: If you’re coming from Oakham or Uppingham, keep an eye out for the free shuttle service it’s the stress-free way to travel.
Dogs: Well-behaved four-legged friends are welcome on non-retractable leads.
As always, the early bird catches the worm and the discount.
While gate prices are £20 for adults and £5 for children, you can save significantly by booking online in advance.

Whether you're a lifelong resident or a first-time visitor, there is no better way to spend a May Sunday. I'll see you there, I'll be the one of many with the camera, trying to catch that perfect Rutland sun.
