Light Up the Night: Oakham's Magical Lantern Walk Returns Today, Martinmas celebrations

Light Up the Night: Oakham's Magical Lantern Walk Returns Today!

Oakham, Rutland – As dusk falls today, Saturday, 8 November 2025, the streets of Oakham will be illuminated by the spectacular sight of the annual Magical Lantern Walk. This enchanting, community-building event, organised by Root & Branch Out.

The walk is set to run from 16:30 (4:30 pm) to 17:45 (5:45 pm)

Participants are invited to gather at All Saints Church in Oakham for the 4:30 pm kick-off. From there, the procession of glowing lanterns will make its way to the beautiful Oakham Castle Grounds (LE15 6DR).

The theme for this year's walk encourages group lanterns—creations large enough to be carried by two or more people. While a lantern-making workshop took place last weekend, all existing lanterns are welcome, with the crucial stipulation that only battery-operated lights are permitted (no naked flames, please).

Entertainment and Warm Refreshments

The atmosphere in the Castle Grounds will be festive and lively upon arrival:

Music and Dance: The lively local team, Rutland Morris, will be performing their traditional dances, adding a celebratory note to the evening.

Refreshments: Castle Cottage Cafe will be open, providing the perfect opportunity to grab a hot drink or snack to warm up after the gentle stroll.

This annual tradition is inspired by the European Martinmas celebrations, where children carry homemade lanterns and process through the town to mark the drawing in of winter nights and the end of the old agricultural calendar.
