Rutland Community Speed Watch Figures Released for 2024
The 2024 Community Speed Watch initiative has proven to be one of the largest programs to date, expanding its reach across key areas including Essendine & Ryhall, Oakham, Preston, Manton, Empingham, Ketton, and Lyddington.
In a concerted effort to improve road safety, Leicestershire Police issued more than 1,100 caution letters to drivers across these seven Community Speed Watch schemes. This initiative, coordinated by Rutland County Council, empowers local volunteers with essential training and equipment to monitor traffic and report vehicles exceeding local speed limits.
Jonathan Clarkson, spokesperson for the Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland Road Safety Partnership, expressed concern regarding the significant rise in warning letters this year. "We are incredibly grateful to the local community speed watch volunteers for all their hard work, however, the marked increase in the number of warning letters sent out to speeding drivers across Rutland this year is unacceptable," he stated. Clarkson emphasized the dangers of excessive speeding, which not only heightens the risk of fatal accidents but also adversely impacts the quality of life in rural communities.
Under the support of Leicestershire Police, registered vehicle keepers received warning letters detailing their speed violations. These letters also include information on why speeding is a community issue and provide advice aimed at altering dangerous driving behaviors.
The increasing volume of letters sent compared to 2023 raises concern, particularly as more densely populated areas, such as Oakham, were included in this year's program. Responding to the data, the Leicestershire Road Safety Partnership plans to enhance police presence on local roads to deter speeding and promote safer driving practices in the coming weeks.
Councillor Christine Wise, Portfolio Holder for Transport, Environment, and Communities, reiterated the focus on road safety. "The safety of our roads is a major priority for both Rutland County Council and Leicestershire Police, as well as a matter of concern for local residents," she said. Wise acknowledged the expanded coverage of the program this year and commended the dedication of local parish volunteers and partners that contributed to another productive year.
The Community Speed Watch Scheme in Rutland is a collaborative initiative involving local communities and several partner organizations within the Safer Rutland Partnership, including:
