Rutland MP Engages in Constructive Dialogue with Leicestershire Council Following Devolution Announcement

In response to the recent announcement regarding local governance changes, Rutland MP Alicia Kearns has expressed her concerns and highlighted the need for collaboration among local leaders. The announcement made by Leicestershire County Council has prompted discussions around devolution in Rutland, creating an opportunity for dialogue and community engagement.

As councils across the country consider the government’s invitation for fast-tracked devolution and the possible postponement of elections, there is a growing need for clarity and transparency in this process. The Labour government's proactive approach to local government reorganisation has sparked discussions among neighboring councils eager to reach collaborative agreements.

Leicester County Council has proposed the creation of two unitary councils: one for the expanded Leicester city area and another to encompass the remaining parts of Leicestershire. While this proposal aims to streamline governance, MP Alicia Kearns voiced her concerns on X , indicating that neither she nor her fellow MPs were consulted in these discussions. In light of this, Kearns has announced plans to hold a public meeting to encourage community dialogue and gather input from constituents.

Kearns has also raised important considerations regarding the proposed expansion of city boundaries, emphasising that any changes should prioritise the needs of Rutland residents. “It is essential that we carefully consider the implications of these plans and ensure that they reflect the best interests of our community,” she stated.

Rutland County Council leader Gale Waller, representing the Liberal Democrats, has approached the discussions with a spirit of cooperation. Waller emphasised the council's commitment to working constructively with neighboring authorities to explore all possible options. “We believe it is crucial to give equal weight to all considerations as we discuss boundaries and governance structures. Clear evidence of the potential benefits must be examined before any new arrangements are adopted,” she said.

The council has acknowledged that successful governance depends on a close alignment between administrative boundaries and the daily lives of residents. Waller noted, “Councils work best when their boundaries reflect where people live, work, learn, shop, and seek healthcare.”

As discussions continue, Rutland County Council has reassured residents that no definitive decisions have been made yet. A working group, consisting of leaders from various political parties in Rutland, is set to convene again next week to further explore the implications of these proposals.

This ongoing dialogue provides an opportunity for local leaders to ensure that any changes made to governance are beneficial for all communities involved. By fostering open communication and collaboration, Rutland can work towards a future where local governance aligns closely with the needs and aspirations of its residents.
