Oakham Mourns Passing of Former Mayor, Joyce Lucas BEM
Oakham has lost a familiar face. Enid Joyce Lucas BEM, known throughout the community simply as Joyce Lucas, has passed away today at Peterborough City Hospital.
As a mark of respect and a solemn tribute to the former councillor and Mayor, Oakham Town Council has lowered its flags to half mast. Joyce Lucas was a formidable and familiar figure in local politics and community life, known for her tireless work ethic and commitment to improving Oakham and Rutland.
Editor's Personal Reflection on Joyce Lucas, A note from Editor Martin Brookes:
"I would just like to remember Joyce the time she was nice to me during a visit to her home last year. During one of her characteristic and tireless fund raising efforts, The Jigsaw Puzzle Sale, I had the pleasure of spending some time with her.
I recall her proudly taking me on a tour of her garden. She pointed out her most recent triumph—specially cultivated daffodils that she was thrilled to share had even made their way from China! She also beamed with pride showing off her splendid new greenhouse, a birthday gift from her husband, Bob Lucas.
The community extends its deepest condolences to Bob Lucas and all of Joyce's family and friends during this time.
