In Memory of Oakham Town Councillor Paul Buxton BA (Hons), B.Sc. (Hons), M.Sc. PGCE

In Memory of Cllr Paul Buxton BA (Hons), B.Sc. (Hons), M.Sc. PGCE

It is with deep sadness that we share passing of Paul Buxton on December 7th, 2024.

Paul became a member of the Oakham community after moving here in 2000.

His career was a testament to his dedication to education and science.  Paul's experience spanned biological laboratory management in the educational sector, culminating in his role as a secondary school chemistry teacher.  His passion for knowledge extended beyond the classroom, as evidenced by his work setting up a seed testing laboratory in Eastern Nepal during the 1980s.

Paul's commitment to Oakham extended far beyond his profession.  He joined the Oakham Town Council in 2017 and quickly became a driving force behind the town's improvement efforts.  Since 2018, he spearheaded the Christmas lighting displays, bringing festive cheer to the streets.  Working alongside Councillor Sally-Anne Wadsworth and the Events Working Group, Paul also played a key role in establishing the summer floral displays.  His dedication wasn't limited to aesthetics; he actively supported Oakham in Bloom's bid to win the East Midlands in Bloom competition, serving as both a committee member and treasurer.

Paul's kindness and willingness to help extended beyond his civic duties.  After lockdown restrictions eased, he actively assisted in the revival of The Rutland Stroke Club, offering support to those in need.

A true lifelong learner, Paul embodied the spirit of an "eternal student."  He furthered his knowledge by pursuing a qualification in Astronomy with the Open University, demonstrating his unwavering curiosity about the world around him.

Paul Buxton will be deeply missed by all who knew him.  His dedication to education, science, and the improvement of Oakham leaves a lasting legacy.
