Four-Legged Heroes Take Center Stage at Oakham RFC Remembrance Lunch
Today, Saturday, 8 November 2025, Oakham Rugby Football Club (ORFC) is hosting its annual Remembrance Lunch at The Clubhouse to raise vital funds for the Royal British Legion (RBL) Poppy Appeal.
The special pre-match event, running from 12:00 to 17:00, offers a unique and heartwarming way for the local community to show support for the Armed Forces, with a poignant focus this year on the unsung, four-legged heroes of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC).
Every year, Oakham RFC dedicates the First XV home match nearest to Armistice Day to sponsor the RBL, and the 2025 event promises to be particularly memorable. The theme is dedicated to the incredible service dogs that play a crucial role in military operations.
The day’s schedule is as follows:
12:00: The Bar Opens for arrivals.
13:00: Lunch is served, including a short, dedicated speaker.
14:15: First XV Match Kick-Off.
The highlight of the lunch will undoubtedly be the VERY special guests from the Defence Animal Training Regiment (DATR) in Melton Mowbray, who will be bringing two serving service dogs to meet attendees! A speaker will also give a short talk on the vital work of local units, including the 1st Military Working Dog Regiment and the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.
Support the Poppy Appeal
Attendees can support the RBL Poppy Appeal through the purchase of RBL merchandise and beautifully hand-crafted poppies available on the day.
The price for the event is £20 per adult and £10 for kids/concessions. This includes a delicious two-course meal with wine:
Adults: Chicken in a creamy Tarragon sauce, served with roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables.
Kids: Choice of the main adult meal or child-friendly favourites like chicken nuggets / pizza and chips.
The club invites everyone to join them for a day filled with good food, great company, Poppies, beer, rugby, and the chance to meet real-life heroes—both human and canine!
