Small Businesses Beware: Refund Scam Targeting Leicestershire and Rutland

Leicestershire Police Warn of Deceptive Payment Scheme

Small business owners across Leicestershire and Rutland are urged to be cautious following reports of a cunning refund scam. The force's Economic Crime Unit (ECU) has identified several incidents in recent months, targeting hotels, shops, and veterinary practices.

According to the ECU, the scam involves manipulating card machines. The offender might either take control of the device during payment or somehow cancel the transaction. They then exploit this vulnerability to either overcharge themselves for an item or directly issue a fraudulent refund to a card not associated with the purchase.

"We've seen this scam hit businesses in North West Leicestershire, Harborough, Hinckley, Charnwood, and Coalville," said Nicole McIntyre of the ECU. "There are likely more victims who haven't reported the crime."

The ECU advises business owners to be vigilant when handling card payments. Here's what you can do:

Stay alert: Carefully observe customers using your card machine.

Be cautious: If anything seems unusual or suspicious during the transaction, cancel it immediately if possible.

Gather evidence: Retain any CCTV footage of the incident, as it can be helpful for investigations.
