The Cottesmore Hunt's annual Boxing Day meet at Stapleford Park near Melton Mowbray saw an unusually low turnout this year.
Cottesmore Boxing Day Hunt Sees Unusually Low Turnout.
The Cottesmore Hunt's annual Boxing Day meet at Stapleford Park near Melton Mowbray saw an unusually low turnout this year. Traditionally, this event attracts a large crowd of supporters, offering a chance for the hunt to showcase its activities to a wider audience.
Anti-hunt saboteurs. Speaking to a local radio station "We welcome these once a year festive flockers to turn up to a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday hunt meet of the Cottesmore and you will see their true colours. Fox hunting, violence and dangerous use of public highways will all be on display."
The event at Stapleford Park passed peacefully.
The reasons behind the lower-than-expected turnout remain unclear. Several factors could have contributed, including: Public opinion towards fox hunting has shifted in recent years, with many viewing it as an outdated and cruel practice. Increased media attention and scrutiny from animal rights groups may have deterred some potential attendees.
The low turnout may have a significant impact on the hunt's fundraising efforts. Boxing Day meets are crucial for generating income and raising awareness within the local community.
All Saints' Church in Oakham will undergo a significant two-month closure in the new year to install a much-needed new lighting system.
All Saints' Church in Oakham to Close for Two Months for Lighting Upgrade
All Saints' Church in Oakham will undergo a significant two-month closure in the new year to install a much-needed new lighting system. The project, funded by a successful £110,000 fundraising campaign, aims to replace the church's aging lights, which have forced parishioners to resort to reading hymnals by torchlight.
The closure will commence on January 2, 2025, and is expected to last until March 9, 2025. During this period, Sunday services will be relocated to Oakham School's chapel, while funerals will be directed to other churches within the Oakham ministry area.
Rev. Stephen Griffiths expressed his gratitude for the community's support, stating, "Thanks to the generosity of our congregation, the community, and grant-making charities, we are able to upgrade the church's lighting to the latest specification. This will significantly enhance the light levels for worshippers, the choir, and various community groups that utilize All Saints'."
The new lighting system will not only improve visibility but also contribute to a more sustainable future by reducing energy consumption. It will also offer greater flexibility for lighting different areas of the church, accommodating various gatherings.
The congregation has already raised £100,000 towards the project and plans to host two music events in the early part of next year to cover the remaining costs.
While the church building will be closed for renovations, the west doors will remain open between 9 am and 4 pm most days, allowing visitors to light candles, say prayers, and collect the weekly newsletter.
This upgrade marks a significant step towards ensuring All Saints' Church continues to serve the Oakham community for many years to come.

Domestic Abuse: A Silent Crisis Worsening During the Holidays
The festive season, often portrayed as a time of joy and togetherness, sadly coincides with a concerning increase in domestic abuse incidents. This year, Rutland, like many areas, is experiencing a troubling rise in reported domestic violence cases.
A Harsh Reality:
It's crucial to remember:
- You are not responsible for their violence: Domestic abuse is never the victim's fault.
- They are not entitled to hit and hurt you: Violence is never acceptable, regardless of the situation.
- They are cowards: True strength lies in respect and compassion, not in inflicting pain on others.
- You deserve better: You deserve a life free from fear and abuse.
Seeking Help:
If you or someone you love is experiencing domestic abuse, please know that help is available:
- National Domestic Abuse Helpline: 0808 2000 247 (available 24/7, including Christmas Day)
- Emergency Situations: Call 999 immediately.

Breaking the Silence:
It's important to understand that domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of gender, race, or socioeconomic background. In Rutland, approximately one-third of domestic abuse victims are male, highlighting the importance of recognizing that men can also be victims.

Rutland County Council Leader Gale Waller has issued a statement regarding the UK Government's recently published Devolution White Paper for England.
Rutland Council Leader Responds to Government's Devolution White Paper
Rutland County Council Leader Gale Waller has issued a statement regarding the UK Government's recently published Devolution White Paper for England.
The White Paper outlines the government's plans to grant more authority to local governments and, in certain cases, restructure them. While acknowledging the potential benefits, Leader Waller emphasised that the proposed changes will necessitate significant time and effort for implementation.
"The White Paper is very much a direction of travel," stated Leader Waller, "with Government keen to work closely with local authorities to grow the UK economy and deliver public services."
The statement further highlighted the potential impact on Rutland County Council, particularly given the government's expectation of significant changes to local government operations.
"It's clear that Government expects to bring about significant changes to the way local government works and that this will affect a large number of Councils – particularly among those who are not already accessing devolved powers," Leader Waller continued.
In response, Rutland County Council plans to actively engage in the process. This includes ongoing discussions with neighbouring authorities to understand their perspectives and evaluate the potential implications of the White Paper's proposals for the region.
"We will need to continue discussions about devolution with neighbouring authorities, to understand their views and consider the various permutations of what’s proposed in the White Paper, relative to our area," Leader Waller explained.
The government has indicated its intention to invite initial proposals from council leaders in the New Year. These proposals will need to adhere to specific criteria for sustainable unitary structures, including submission deadlines and government response procedures.
Leader Waller concluded by emphasising that Rutland County Council will only support plans or proposals that demonstrably benefit the county and its communities.
This statement underscores Rutland County Council's commitment to carefully considering the potential impacts of the government's devolution plans and ensuring that any changes serve the best interests of its residents.
Full statement:
"The UK Government has published its Devolution White Paper. This sets out how it plans to give more powers to and – in some cases – reorganise local government in England. The White Paper is very much a direction of travel, with Government keen to work closely with local authorities to grow the UK economy and deliver public services.
"It’s clear that Government expects to bring about significant changes to the way local government works and that this will affect a large number of Councils – particularly among those who are not already accessing devolved powers. It’s also clear that this amount of change will take a long time. It will require a number of years to fully understand, agree upon and then implement any kind of largescale reorganisation.
"It’s important that Rutland engages constructively and proactively in this process. We will need to continue discussions about devolution with neighbouring authorities, to understand their views and consider the various permutations of what’s proposed in the White Paper, relative to our area.
"The Government has said it will write to council leaders in the New Year to invite initial proposals, setting out the criteria for what it considers to be sustainable unitary structures, when areas should submit proposals and how Government will then respond.
"What we can say for certain is that we will only support plans or proposals if we believe they are beneficial to Rutland and its communities."
Gale Waller, Leader of Rutland County Council

Paralyzed Man Marries Fiancée in Hospital After Devastating motorcycle Crash
Barry Brookes, (my nephew) 22, was left paralyzed from the chest down after a serious car accident, married his fiancée, Evie, in a moving ceremony at Addenbrooke's Hospital on December 20th 2024.
The accident occurred on November 8th 2024 on the A1 near Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, while Barry was biking to pick up Evie from work. The collision launched him onto the bonnet of a van, resulting in a severe spinal injury.
Barry said: "Doctors told me I was paralyzed from the chest down and that walking again was unlikely"
Barry also shared. "It was devastating news, but Evie and I knew we wouldn't let this define us."
Despite facing a long road to recovery, the couple decided to proceed with their wedding plans. "We still hadn't started planning before the accident," Barry explained, "but afterwards, we realised life's too short."
The ceremony took place in the hospital's day room, with close family and friends in attendance. Evie wore a full bridal gown, and Barry donned a suit. "It was magical," he recalled.
Barry, a former warehouse worker, is determined to maintain a positive outlook. "I'm going to be in a wheelchair, most likely, for the rest of my life, but I won't let it get me down," he said. "I can breathe on my own, use my arms, and sit up in bed. I believe I can live independently one day, in a wheelchair."
Doctors have estimated that Barry will remain in the hospital for at least another year.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist him with medical expenses and the cost of adaptive equipment.
