A Family Affair Oakham By-Election Candidates Step Up

The upcoming Oakham by-election is stirring local interest, especially with the involvement of candidates who are closely linked to current and former council members. Following the unexpected passing of Councillor Hannah Edwards, a member of the Liberal Democrats, residents of Oakham North East will soon have the opportunity to choose a new county councillor. Among the candidates vying for this important role are Kate Ross, the daughter of Ramsay Ross, a Labour councillor for Oakham North West, and Linda Chatfield, the wife of Councillor Mark Chatfield, who also represents the Liberal Democrats. This familial connection adds a unique dimension to the election, highlighting both a legacy of public service and a desire to continue the work of their predecessors. Both Kate Ross and Linda Chatfield are running on party lines similar to their family members. Ross aims to embody the values of her father’s party, while Chatfield wishes to further the goals of the Liberal Democrats, following in the footsteps of her husband. In addition to Kate and Linda, the ballot will also feature Conservative candidate Christopher Clark, a long-time Oakham resident and retired businessman, alongside Ben Callaghan from Reform UK, who previously served as an Independent councillor for several years. All four candidates have emphasised the regeneration of Oakham’s town centre as a key priority. Christopher Clark drew on his extensive local experience, underlining the importance of community involvement in shaping the future of the town. He stated, “I’ve been involved in so many things in Oakham that I believe I could make a real difference. It’s essential to engage residents in the discussions about what they want for our town.” Linda Chatfield echoed this commitment to community, expressing enthusiasm for the prospect of continuing the community surgeries once held by Hannah Edwards. Reflecting on her family’s political background, she conveyed a deep belief in the values of the Liberal Democrats. Meanwhile, Ben Callaghan, who recently joined Reform UK, is optimistic about gaining support from residents. He shared, “It’s early days, but the feedback I’ve received thus far has been encouraging. People want practical solutions, and we aim to deliver just that.” As the election date approaches on Thursday, November 21, the excitement is palpable. Voters will have the chance to choose their representative, with the results anticipated to be announced the following day.
