Uppingham Residents Overwhelmingly Back Neighbourhood Plan

Plan Steering Group.

Residents of Uppingham have decisively voted in favour of adopting a Neighbourhood Plan for their parish, paving the way for greater community influence over future local development. In a referendum held on Thursday, February 24, 2025, the plan received strong support, exceeding the 50% threshold required for its implementation.

The referendum posed a clear question to voters: "Do you want Rutland County Council to use the neighbourhood plan for the parish of Uppingham to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?"

The results demonstrated a clear mandate from the community, with 397 residents voting 'Yes' in support of the plan, compared to 121 who voted 'No'. This significant majority underscores the community's desire to have a direct say in shaping the growth and character of Uppingham.

Despite the clear outcome, the total turnout for the referendum was 17%. However, the strong positive response from those who participated ensures the Neighbourhood Plan will now move forward.

The Neighbourhood Plan itself can be accessed at www.rutland.gov.uk/neighbourhoodplans.

As the Local Planning Authority, Rutland County Council is now obligated to formally adopt the Uppingham Neighbourhood Plan within eight weeks of the referendum result. This adoption will embed the plan's policies and proposals into the statutory planning framework, meaning it will be a crucial material consideration for all future planning applications within the Uppingham neighbourhood area.
