Rutland MP Expresses Concerns Over Devolution Proposals

Alicia Kearns, the Conservative MP for Rutland and Stamford, has voiced serious concerns regarding new government devolution proposals that may merge Rutland into a “mega council” with larger authorities beyond Leicestershire.

Kearns' worries arise from Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s plans to overhaul local council funding and governance, which include replacing the Rural Services Delivery Grant (RSDG) with recovery funding focused on deprived areas. Last year, Rutland received over £1 million from the RSDG, and Kearns fears the removal of this grant could significantly impact local services, especially amid ongoing financial pressures.

“I am gravely concerned about the impact of the new Government’s decisions on Rutland,” Kearns stated, emphasising her commitment to securing fair funding for rural communities. She warned that joining a larger council could diminish local representation and power.

While Rutland County Council leader Gale Waller indicated the council's interest in discussing devolution, formal talks have not occurred since the Labour government took office in July. With the council currently implementing cost-saving measures, the future of local governance remains uncertain as the community watches how these proposals will unfold.
