Rutland County Council to Discuss Devolution and Reorganisation at Special Meeting

Rutland County Council will hold a special meeting in February to discuss the government's plans for devolution and local government reorganisation.   

The government's Devolution White Paper, published in December, proposes that all councils outside of existing combined authorities join "strategic authorities" with a minimum population of 1.5 million. Simultaneously, the government aims to replace the current two-tier system of county and district councils with unitary authorities, each with a population of at least 500,000.

Rutland County Council, recognising the need to comply with these directives, is actively exploring options with neighbouring authorities. However, the council emphasises that any reorganisation must be evidence-based and reflect the realities of local communities.   

A special council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 11th, at 7:00 PM in the main Council Chamber. This meeting will be live-streamed for public viewing.   

Prior to the meeting, a detailed report will be published, outlining the current situation regarding devolution and reorganisation. This will provide Councillors with the necessary information to engage in a thorough public discussion.

Councillor Gale Waller, Leader of Rutland County Council, stated: "Devolution has the potential to benefit our communities, but only if implemented correctly. We are committed to working constructively with the government and our neighbouring authorities.

"Reorganisation must precede any consideration of devolution. We need to carefully examine all options and ensure that any changes are supported by evidence and reflect the way people live in our communities.

"The government has requested interim reorganisation proposals by March, and we are awaiting further clarification on the specific deadline. This special council meeting will provide a crucial platform for Councillors to openly debate these important issues and represent the interests of our residents."
