Rutland County Council Revamps Bus Services

Rutland County Council is set to overhaul its local bus services in an effort to better meet the needs of residents. The council's ambitious plan includes the possibility of introducing evening and Sunday services next year, provided they can secure additional funding.

Currently, the council subsidises existing bus services to the tune of over £550,000. This substantial investment is necessitated by the fact that many buses travel long distances with few paying passengers. To address this issue, the council is proposing a revised bus service improvement plan that will be voted on at a meeting tonight.

As part of the plan, a trial of demand responsive travel will be conducted in Rutland this spring. This service will allow residents to book a bus to take them to their desired destination at a specific time, providing a more flexible and personalised transportation option. Additionally, the council is offering free bus travel throughout December and during the school summer holidays next year for children in the county.

To support these initiatives, Rutland County Council has received over £700,000 in grant funding from the government. The funding will be used to help implement the revised bus service improvement plan and ensure that the county's transportation needs are adequately met.
