The vibrant spirit of local commerce was on full display as Alicia Kearns MP announced the winners of the highly anticipated Rutland and Stamford's Favourite Independent Business Awards. This year's competition saw an astounding 20,400 votes cast, highlighting the deep affection and support the community holds for its independent businesses.

At the heart of the celebration was the crowning of Harrison and Dunn in Stamford as the overall winner for 2024-5, securing a remarkable 820 votes. This resounding victory underscores the business's exceptional contribution and popularity within the region.

The awards, spanning 16 diverse categories, showcased the breadth and depth of talent and innovation present in Rutland and Stamford. From bustling cafes to charming bookshops, the competition celebrated the unique character of each independent business.

Category Champions:

Beauty, Pampering and Wellness: Sunset Beach Tanning Studio (Stamford), with Glow (Oakham) as runner-up.

Bookshops: Walker's Bookshop (Oakham), followed by St Mary's Books (Stamford).

Butchers: Mill Farm (Manthorpe), with Farmer Lou (Barnsdale Avenue) in second place.

Cafés: Stamford Garden Centre Café, with Central Café and Tea Rooms (Stamford) as runner-up.

Clothing and Accessories: Energy Clothing (Stamford), with B Boutique by Rebecca as runner-up.

Children and Babies: Noughts and Crosses (Stamford), with Stork of Stamford coming second.

Craft and Hobby: The Place (Stamford), followed by Wool Zone (Oakham).

Farm and Produce: Farmer Lou, with Rectory Farm Shop (Great Easton) as runner-up.

Food and Drink: Hambleton Bakery (Oakham), followed by Askers Bakery (Stamford).

Garden Centres: Rassell's Nurseries (Little Bytham), with Waterside Garden Centre (Baston) in second place.

Gifts and Stationery: Love it, Stamford, followed by Quirky Bird (Oakham).

Homeware: Country Traditionals (Stamford), followed by Knights of Oakham.

Pharmacies: Rutland Late Night Pharmacy, with Stamford Pharmacy as runner-up.

Village Shop: The Village Stores (Ryhall), with Bytham's Community Shop coming runner up.

Special Commendation: Harrison and Dunn, with EDEN Tattoo and Piercing Studio coming second.

Alicia Kearns expressed her delight at the overwhelming response and the opportunity to celebrate the hard work and dedication of local businesses. "It has been such a joy to celebrate all of our wonderful independent shops over the past few weeks and read all of your lovely comments about your favourites," she stated. "Giving independent business owners the good news has been the highlight of my year – especially when so many are having such a tough time of it. These shops really do make our high streets and communities what they are."

She extended her gratitude to everyone who participated in the voting process, acknowledging the vital role they play in supporting local businesses, particularly during challenging economic times. "Congratulations to all of our winners whose hard work and contribution to our communities had been deservedly recognised, and to everyone nominated as it means you're loved locally!"

The awards serve as a powerful reminder of the enduring importance of independent businesses in shaping the character and vitality of Rutland and Stamford. The overwhelming support demonstrated by the community underscores the deep connection between residents and the local businesses that enrich their lives.
