A Centennial Tribute Rutland Honours Late Queen Elizabeth II in Oakham
The sun shone over Oakham today as members of the community gathered to mark a milestone that, while bittersweet, resonated with deep local affection. To honour what would have been the 100th birthday of the late Queen Elizabeth II, a poignant tribute was held at the site of the town’s landmark memorial statue.
The event, led by the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr. Sarah Furness, drew a respectful crowd of residents and local dignitaries, all gathered to reflect on the life and legacy of the UK’s longest-reigning monarch.
Standing before the bronze likeness of the late Queen, Dr. Furness delivered a moving tribute that touched on the enduring bond between the Crown and the county of Rutland. Highlighting the spiritual significance of the day, the Lord Lieutenant read a special prayer sent to her by the Archbishop of Canterbury, specifically intended for this centennial occasion.
The atmosphere was one of quiet reverence as the words echoed across the library garden, reminding those present of the late Queen's steadfast faith and service.
In a beautiful display of community spirit, the floral centerpiece of the ceremony was a stunning bouquet of large red roses. The arrangement was handcrafted by the local flower stall from Oakham Market.
Local resident Henry Dawe stood before the assembly to recite his original poem dedicated to the Queen.
Following the readings, Dr. Furness officially unveiled a new information sign. This new addition provides visitors with historical context regarding the statue and the Queen’s historical ties to the smallest county in England.
The statue, which features the late Queen in her robes accompanied by her beloved corgis, has become a focal point for tourism and local pride since its installation. By adding the information signage and marking this centennial, Rutland ensures that the story of Elizabeth II remains accessible to the next generation of Oakham residents.
As the ceremony concluded, the red roses remained on the plinth a vibrant splash of colour, symbolising a county's enduring "thank you" to a remarkable Sovereign.
