A quiet Friday evening in Rutland was disrupted last week when armed police officers were urgently deployed to reports of a male brandishing a knife and making threats to a member of the public.
The incident took place at approximately 9:15 pm on June 5 along High Street East in Uppingham. According to police reports, eyewitnesses spotted a man carrying a weapon in the street, where he allegedly made direct, violent threats to a passerby. Because the report involved a bladed weapon in a public area, armed response units were immediately dispatched to the scene to secure the neighbourhood and protect local residents.
Upon arrival, officers located and detained a 17-year-old male. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of multiple offences, including the possession of a knife blade or sharp pointed article in a public place, and using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour with the intent to cause fear of violence. The teenager was also arrested for assaulting a constable in the execution of their duty during the encounter. Fortunately, authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported by members of the public or the officers involved.
The suspect has since been released on bail while detectives continue their work. A police spokesperson noted that because inquiries remain active and ongoing, the force cannot comment any further on the specifics of the investigation at this time.
