Rutland Remembers: A Day of Respect and Reflection, in the County Town of Oakham. Video and Photographs

Rutland Remembers: A Day of Respect and Reflection

On a solemn day of remembrance, the county of Rutland honoured its fallen heroes with a traditional parade and a poignant service, though with a few noticeable changes to the usual format. The events centred around the county town of Oakham, culminating in a moving ceremony at All Saints Church.

The Parade and Salute

The commemoration began with a respectful parade passing through Oakham's streets. The marchers proceeded towards All Saints Church, offering a formal display of gratitude and respect. A key moment was the salute taken by the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Sarah Furness, as the parade moved past. This gesture underscored the importance of the occasion for the entire county.

County Service and Wreath Laying

The procession led participants to All Saints Church, Oakham, where the annual county remembrance service was held. This service provided a time for reflection, prayer, and the reading of names, acknowledging the ultimate sacrifice made by servicemen and women.

Following the service, the mood shifted to one of quiet tribute with the laying of wreaths. This deeply symbolic act was made even more moving by the presence of a piper, whose traditional music added a layer of haunting to the proceedings.

Noted Changes This Year

This year’s observance introduced two changes to the long-standing tradition:

No Evening Parade: In a deviation from previous years, there was no parade at the end of the afternoon. The day's formal marching concluded with the initial procession to the church.

War Memorial Ceremony Adjusted: The usual structure at the war memorial was modified. Instead of the customary two minutes' silence observed there, the ceremony focused on the wreath laying and prayers offered by two chaplains. This change simplified the war memorial part of the day, placing the emphasis squarely on the personal act of tribute and spiritual reflection.

Despite the adjustments, the core spirit of remembrance remained undimmed, allowing the community of Rutland to pay its respects and ensure that the sacrifices of previous generations are never forgotten.
