Rutland County Museum Unveils Ambitious £7.8 Million Transformation Plan
Rutland County Museum is gearing up for a monumental transformation as a formal planning application has officially been submitted to reimagine the historic site as a premier cultural and heritage hub for the region. Backed by a substantial investment of £6 million from Rutland County Council alongside £1.8 million in funding from the UK government, the ambitious redevelopment promises to breathe new life into the museum while celebrating the county's rich history.
Councillor Rosemary Powell, the council's Portfolio Holder for Economy and Place, recently shared an update on the project, detailing sweeping upgrades designed to modernise the visitor experience. History enthusiasts and families alike will have plenty to look forward to, including a brand-new Jurassic gallery and a comprehensive Stone Age to medieval gallery complete with a dedicated Roman exhibition. Visitors can also expect cutting-edge immersive digital experiences specifically designed to bring the famous Ketton Roman Mosaic vividly to life.
Beyond the historical exhibits, the redevelopment focuses heavily on community engagement and modern amenities. Plans feature a striking new entrance accompanied by a welcoming café, a gift shop, and flexible community areas. A brand-new multi-use arts and theatre space will provide a vibrant venue for local performances and events, while a dedicated education room will welcome visiting school groups. Furthermore, Rutland's local history collection is set to find a new and improved home in the adjacent Catmose Cottage building, alongside enhanced displays spanning the entire museum.
Subject to planning approval, construction on the project is expected to kick off in March 2027, with an aggressive timeline aiming for completion by the end of the year.
