TIME FOR REFORM IN BARLEYTHORPE AND RUTLAND
Reform UK candidate for the upcoming Barleythorpe by-election is Declan McCarthy.
Declan has lived in Rutland for the past six years and is a part-time freelance
educational consultant and director of an independent school for pupils with special
educational needs.
He has an honours degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in psychology &
education. He started his career as a teacher, gained extensive experience as a
headteacher, a local authority adviser, then as an OFSTED inspector within the
independent and maintained school sectors. Declan has a great deal of experience
serving on governing bodies both within the maintained and independent school
sectors, in various capacities as a parent governor, a foundation governor and a
community governor in different schools.
He has exceptional spoken and written communication skills; extensive experience in
the private and public sectors; the ability to provide robust challenge to officers and
fellow councillors on policy decisions; and the ability to conduct rigorous and
analytical reviews in order to drive efficiency, effectiveness and value for money.
Declan has many interests, including singing, gardening, visiting places of historical
interest, and cooking. Declan is a family man and enjoys spending time with his
children and grandchildren.
Declan has a special companion, his rescue dog, ‘Ollie’, who is now in his forever
home. He is a very friendly little dog, and you might see him walking with Declan on
the campaign trail. Feel free to stroke him, as he loves people and is great with
children and other animals.
Declan is fully committed to Reform UK’s values of putting the interests of the family,
the local community and the country first by applying common sense solutions to
policies which seek to restore our country to greatness and prosperity.
Declan is aware of many of the issues that concern Barleythorpe residents, including
flooding, new housing developments, roads and pavements, and of course the
unaffordable council tax levels, but plans to learn as much as possible as he intends
to set up a local surgery where residents can come to meet him to express any
concerns about council services or issues in Barleythorpe. Declan will always listen
to and act on your concerns so that a vote for Declan means a vote for real change
for the benefit of your family and your local community.
‘My key priorities locally are to address the concerns expressed by residents locally
during canvassing in the Barleythorpe ward, which included the level of council tax,
the poor state of the roads and pavements, the inordinate time it has taken for the
council to resolve the sewage issue and devolution. I propose to ensure that the
council addresses any wastage in spending so that residents benefit from savings
and do my best in seeking to resolve any concerns that the residents may have in a
timely manner. My priorities nationally closely reflect those of Reform UK.
As I am semi-retired, I have more time to devout to residents, and I will be visible
through holding monthly surgeries.
