North Luffenham Rutland Community Vital Livestock Reminders
Important Reminder for Dog Owners
The Parish Council has issued an urgent reminder regarding responsible pet ownership in the surrounding countryside. With the village currently in the midst of lambing season, there have been several reports of dogs being walked off-lead in fields occupied by grazing sheep.
To ensure the safety of livestock and the well-being of the village’s farming community, all dog owners are reminded of the following guidelines:
Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times when in fields containing livestock, or in fields where livestock may be introduced. Even well-behaved pets can cause stress or injury to pregnant ewes and newborn lambs.
It is essential that all dog waste is picked up and removed from the fields. Dog faeces can carry serious diseases, such as Gid and Sheep Measles, which are fatal to sheep. Clearing up is not just a matter of hygiene for walkers, but a critical health measure for the local sheep population.
The cooperation of all dog walkers is essential during this busy time of year for local farmers. By keeping dogs under control and cleaning up after them, the community can help protect the village's sheep and lambs throughout the season.
