Oakham Residents Mark Remembrance Sunday with Silent Tribute

For the past four years, a group of dedicated residents, led by veteran Mr. Paul Beech, have gathered at the Oakham War Memorial each Remembrance Sunday to observe a two-minute silence at 11:00 AM. This poignant tribute, held before the official Royal British Legions afternoon event, has steadily grown in participation, reflecting the community's deep respect for those who have served their country.

While the official Remembrance Sunday event is organised by Rutland County Council and takes place later in the afternoon, this earlier gathering offers a more intimate and personal way to honour the fallen. Participants, including Mr. Beech and other veterans, seek to maintain a simple and respectful atmosphere, focusing on the solemn act of remembrance.

Town Councillor Martin Brookes, a long-time Oakham resident, has been a regular attendee of the 11 AM memorial commemoration. Recognising the growing significance of this event, Cllr. Brookes expressed his support for official recognition by Oakham Town Council. He stated, "I recognise this event has grown each year and support the calls for Oakham Town Council to recognise the event and send a representative of the Town Council to the event. This act of remembrance in no way detracts from the official county event to be held at the Oakham war memorial later today."

Cllr. Brookes also advocated for the return of Armistice Day commemorations to the High Street. He noted, "All the shop staff used to turn out for it and you can't expect them all to close up shop and stand in the castle grounds."

As the community continues to honour its fallen heroes, the 11.00 AM remembrance at the Oakham War Memorial stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of gratitude and respect. With the potential for increased recognition from the Town Council, this tradition may flourish even further, ensuring that the sacrifices of those who served are never forgotten.

The County Service of Remembrance will take place at All Saints' Church, Oakham. Starting at 2pm, Military Units, Cadets, Scouts, Guides, voluntary organisations and Armed Forces veterans will parade to the church, from Oakham Castle along the High Street. All members of the public are warmly invited to attend the Service and should be seated in All Saints' Church by 2:15pm. The service will start at 2:30pm. After the service dignitaries and other organisations, led by the Lord Lieutenant of Oakham will lay wreaths at the war memorial.
