Lanterns Light Up Oakham for St Martin's Day

A magical procession in the historic town

Every year, the charming town of Oakham, Rutland, comes alive with a display of light and community spirit. On the evening of November 11th, the town gathered to celebrate St Martin's Day, a tradition marking the end of the old agricultural calendar.

This year, hundreds of people joined the lantern procession, a mesmerising sight as the warm glow of lanterns illuminated. The procession began at All Saints' Church, winding its way through the park, culminating at Oakham Castle.

Children and adults alike carried homemade lanterns, adding to the enchanting atmosphere. Once at the castle the air was filled with the sound of joyful singing as participants shared songs.

After the procession, the lanterns were beautifully displayed along a rope in the castle grounds, creating a captivating spectacle. The community gathered to enjoy hot drinks from the Castle Cottage Café.
