Heightened Security at Rutland County Council Follows Reported Sexual Assault

Samsic Guard on duty at Rutland County Council

Rutland County Council has significantly increased security measures at its headquarters in Catmose following a reported sexual assault on the premises on August 18th. The new security arrangements, which include the deployment of security guards, are costing the council £14,000 per month.

The decision to enhance security was prompted by an alleged sexual assault at the Catmose building. Leicestershire Police have charged Benedict Azam, a 34-year-old with no fixed address, in connection with the incident. Azam has also been charged with two other assaults: one on Oakham's high street on the same day as the alleged council assault, and another on Burley Road the day before. He is scheduled to appear at Leicester Crown Court on October 6th to enter a plea.

The security guards are being provided by Samsic UK. The initial arrangement is for a three-month period, at a cost of £14,000 per month, while the council reviews its long-term security needs. This temporary measure is in place to ensure the safety of staff and visitors while a permanent solution is developed.
