Claire Lomas MBE, The Inspirational Bionic London Marathon Runner, Passes Away

Claire Lomas, a renowned inspirational figure, tragically passed away at the age of 44 following an accident in Jordan on August 22, 2024. 

Her loss has sent shockwaves through the community.

Lomas, who lived in Eye Kettleby with her husband Dan and their two young daughters, was a dedicated fundraiser and advocate for individuals with spinal injuries. Before her paralysis, she had a successful career as a chiropractor and was a competitive Three-Day Eventing rider.

In 2012, Lomas made headlines worldwide when she became the first paralyzed person to complete the London Marathon in a robotic suit. This remarkable feat took her 17 days and raised a significant amount of money for the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation (NSIF). Her determination and courage inspired countless people around the globe.

Following her historic marathon finish, Lomas continued to push boundaries. She completed the Great North Run and Great South Run in the robotic suit and also hand cycled 400 miles around the UK. Her unwavering spirit and dedication to her cause earned her widespread admiration and respect.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Lomas was awarded the MBE in 2017. Prince William, who presented her with the honour, expressed his admiration for her incredible achievements.

Despite her disability, Lomas never let it hold her back. She learned to ride motorcycles at speed and even took up skiing on adapted skis. Her positive attitude and resilience were a testament to her strength of character.

Lomas was also a sought-after motivational speaker, sharing her inspiring story with audiences across the country. Her message of hope, perseverance, and the power of the human spirit resonated deeply with people of all ages.

The loss of Claire Lomas is a profound one. Her legacy of courage, determination, and compassion will continue to inspire generations to come.
