Empty Homes Grants to Tackle Homelessness in Rutland

Empty Homes Grants to Tackle Homelessness in Rutland

Rutland County Council is offering financial incentives to property owners to help reduce homelessness in the area. The Empty Homes Grant Scheme provides grants of up to £15,000 to bring vacant properties back into use.

Property owners can apply for grants to cover the cost of necessary repairs and renovations to make their empty homes habitable. In return, they must agree to rent the property to households at risk of homelessness for a minimum of five years. The rent must be set at the Local Housing Allowance rate plus 10%.

The Council will carefully consider each application based on several factors, including:

The property's location, size, and condition must meet the needs of households at risk of homelessness.

Properties that have been empty for an extended period are prioritised.

The investment in the property must be justified by the potential benefits to the community.

Rutland currently faces a significant homelessness crisis, with 63 families at risk of losing their homes and 16 families already in temporary accommodation. By bringing empty properties back into use, the Council aims to alleviate this pressure and provide much-needed housing.

The Council urges property owners with vacant homes to consider applying for the Empty Homes Grant Scheme. By working together, the community can make a significant impact on homelessness and improve the quality of life for residents.
