Historic Full Peal Rings Out Across Oakham for Mothers' Union Milestone
Oakham was filled with the resonant sound of change ringing this week as visiting bellringers marked a major national milestone.
On Tuesday, July 21, All Saints Church played host to members of the prestigious Ancient Society of College Youths, who performed an exhaustive full peal lasting three hours and thirty-one minutes.
The visiting contingent who are currently staying near Rutland Water and hail from locations as far afield as Kent and London undertook the massive feat to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Mothers' Union.
The group executed a precise 5,120 change composition of London Surprise Major on the church's impressive ring of eight bells.
The Ancient Society of College Youths, founded in 1637, is one of the oldest and most renowned bellringing societies in the world. Their special Rutland tour highlights both the rich heritage of British change ringing and the ongoing community contributions of organisations like the Mothers' Union, which has supported families locally and globally for a century and a half.
Locals and visitors paused throughout the afternoon to enjoy the impressive, sustained cascade of sound pouring from the church's 14th-century tower, echoing a tradition that has anchored community life in Oakham for generations.
