Oakham Remembers Local Alfred Robinson : Footballer, Veteran, and Family Man
The community of Oakham came together yesterday to celebrate the life of Alfred Robinson DEWIS, a a resident who passed away on March 9th, 2025, at the age of 80. The service, held at All Saints Church in Oakham, was a poignant tribute to a man who touched many lives through his sporting achievements, his service to his country, and most importantly, his family.
Known as Alf, he leaves behind his wife Della, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Alf's early life held a remarkable sporting highlight. As a talented young man, his prowess as a goalkeeper for the Young Boys team at just 14 years old caught the attention of national scouts. This led to a momentous occasion in February 1960 when he earned a trial for England. The culmination of this achievement came on April 2nd, 1960, when Alf proudly stood between the posts for the England Schoolboys team. The match proved to be a resounding success, with England triumphing over Northern Ireland with a decisive 4-1 victory, a testament to Alf's skills and dedication. This early sporting success remained a significant part of his life story, a source of pride for his family.
Beyond his sporting achievements, Alf dedicated himself to serving his country as a member of the Royal Air Force (RAF). His time in the RAF demonstrated his commitment and discipline, qualities that likely extended to all aspects of his life.
Upon returning to civilian life, Alf remained an active and valued member of the Oakham community. His affiliation with The Royal British Legion Oakham further highlighted his continued connection to his fellow service members and his dedication to remembrance and support.
Yesterday's service at All Saints Church provided an opportunity for family, friends, and members of the Oakham community to share their memories of Alf. Undoubtedly, stories of his youthful footballing glory, his time in the RAF, and above all, his role as a loving husband, father, and grandfather were shared and cherished.
Oakham Town Councillor Christopher Clark and Deputy Clerk Kathy attended as the council's representatives and signed the book of condolences on behalf of Oakham Town Council.
