Emergency Leak Closes Greetham Main Street; Surfacing Works to Hit Great Casterton and Langham
By Rutland Democracy Reporter Monday, 16 February 2026
Motorists across Rutland are being warned to plan for significant travel disruptions this week as a wave of roadworks, ranging from emergency leak repairs to major resurfacing projects, takes hold of the county’s highways.
The most immediate impact is in Greetham, where Main Street (B668) has been closed for urgent repairs. Severn Trent Water is currently on-site tackling a significant leak.
While a formal diversion is in place, the Council has confirmed that access will be maintained for residents and emergency services where possible. However, through-traffic is advised to avoid the area entirely until the "urgent" repairs are finalized.
Starting today, Monday, 16 February, a series of planned closures will affect several key villages.
- Great Casterton: Pickworth Road, Water Lane, and Smiths Lane are closed daily (7:30 am to 5:00 pm) from 16 to 20 February for combined surfacing and drainage work.
- Exton & Langham: Friday, 20 February, will see simultaneous one-day closures on Stamford Road (Exton) and Burley Road (Langham) for resurfacing.
- Greetham (Wood Lane): Over the weekend (21–22 February), Wood Lane will also be closed for surfacing.
Drivers in Great Casterton should also note a brief, high-impact closure today, 16 February.
In addition to full closures, several sets of temporary signals are expected to cause peak-time congestion:
Langham (Melton Road): Long-term major gas replacement work by Cadent continues with 3-way signals in place 24/7 until 20 February.
Oakham (Barleythorpe Road): 4-way signals were recently in place for Bellway Homes resurfacing; motorists should remain alert for lingering works in the area.
Rutland County Council emphasises its role in coordinating these works to minimise "highway chaos," though officials admit that emergency repairs like the Greetham leak cannot always be planned for.
"We're responsible for monitoring and coordinating roadworks in Rutland to help keep the public safe and reduce congestion," a council spokesperson stated.
