By Local Democracy Reporter
The clock is ticking for residents across the region to have their say on a set of historic reforms that could fundamentally alter the face of local democracy. With just three days remaining before the Government’s consultation on Local Government Re-Organisation (LGR) draws to a close, officials are issued a final "now or never" plea for public input.
These proposals represent the most significant structural changes to local authorities in 50 years. Depending on the outcome, the current system of councils could be streamlined or entirely replaced, impacting how essential services from bin collections to social care are managed and funded for decades to come.
This consultation is the only official window for the public to influence the reforms. While some residents have expressed concern that the proposed models do not perfectly align with their local identities, experts are urging everyone to participate regardless. Even if a preferred specific outcome isn’t explicitly listed as a primary option, stating a clear preference for how your community should be organized is vital to ensuring the Government understands the public’s true priorities.
The deadline for submissions is 23:59 this Thursday, 26th March. Residents are encouraged to use the official online portals to ensure their voices are registered in the final count.
For those in Rutland and Leicestershire, as well as those in Lincolnshire (including North and North East Lincolnshire), links to the specific GOV.UK proposal pages are active and ready for feedback.
